Ross Model 1905 Straight Pull Bolt Action Rifle
Ross rifles were originally issued to Canadian troops during the First World War. Canada later adopted the British S.M.L.E. as a replacement for these shoulder arms after many soldiers were severely injured or killed by catastrophic failure of the Ross bolt mechanism. Some surplus examples were used by U.S. troops as fourth- or fifth-line arms for drill and Home Guard purposes during the Second World War.
